Passport/visa requirements: Travellers arriving by air can enter for up to 90 days on a tourist card issued on arrival and must have a valid return ticket. Should they be arriving overland, or by sea, they must get a visa in advance from their nearest Venezuelan Embassy or Consulate. Guests should not overstay the 90 days or risk being arrested and fined when departing. Extensions of up to 90 days can be arranged at any SAIME (immigration service) office for a fee but application must be before the tourist card expires. Passport should be valid for a minimum period of six months for entry into Venezuela.


Airports: Most international visitors arrive at CaracasAeropuerto Internacional ‘Simón Bolívar’ (www.aeropuerto-maiquetia.com.ve in Spanish) in Maiquetía, 26km from Caracas. Venezuela has several other airports servicing international flights, but these change frequently and unexpectedly. Isla de Margarita’s airport is used by charter flights bringing international package tourists, but few independent travelers fly in here.
