Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in southern Africa bordered by South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Mozambique. Its name is a tribute to the Empire of Great Zimbabwe and comes from the Shona language meaning 'great houses of stone'. Long before contact with European colonizers, the Kingdoms of Mapungubwe and Zimbabwe were sophisticated trade states with stone architecture. By the late 19th century the British arrived and the area was renamed Southern Rhodesia after business magnate and imperialist Cecil Rhodes. Nowadays Zimbabwe is best known for its wildlife sanctuaries, the Victoria Falls and the depth of its historical legacy.
