The Maldives or Maldive Islands is an island country in the Indian Ocean formed by chain of 26 atolls off India's Lakshadweep islands.

"It is the smallest Asian country in both population and area and with an average ground level of 1.5m above sea level, it is the lowest country on the planet."

Tourism in Maldives, which was introduced in 1972, has successfully developed and is popular for watersports enthusiasts and fans of the beach. As the destination offers year-round warm temperatures, divers are spoilt for choice and many visit the Maldives repeatedly for the sole purpose of diving. All resorts in the Maldives have professional dive schools with multi-lingual instructors and conduct courses for beginners as well as the advanced. Many of the resorts have excellent house reefs.

The Maldives is also a favourite wedding and honeymoon destination and almost all resorts cater for this market, with offers of flower decorated rooms, candle-lit dinners on the beach and Champagne breakfast.
