Copenhagen consists of a multitude of areas, each with its own charm, history and distinctive character and together they make up a dense urban fabric. Though different, the areas have three main features in common - the presence of water, parks and bicycle paths.

Copenhagen is a major centre of culture, business, media, and science and life science, information technology and shipping all play important sectors, with research and development playing a main role in the city's economy.

Once known as Havn (harbour), Denmark's capital and largest city has grown in significance over the years and has been described as a boom town. This is partly due to massive investments in cultural facilities as well as infrastructure and a new wave of successful designers, chefs and architects.

"The city is now one of the most densely populated areas in northern Europe and the most visited city of the Nordic countries."
